Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

Kintsugi (“we,” “our,” or “us”) operates the website kintsugi.community, the Kintsugi Data Sync Chrome extension, and related services. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our platform, including our web application and browser extension.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Account Information

  • Your name, email address, and profile photo when you sign up via Google or email
  • A short bio you may optionally provide in your profile settings
  • Career stage information you provide during onboarding

2.2 Social Media Data

When you connect social platforms or use the Chrome extension, we collect:

  • Follower/connection data — Usernames, display names, bios, profile photos, and location information from your followers on Twitter/X, Instagram, and LinkedIn
  • Instagram insights — Interests, audience locations, ad categories, follower/following counts, and mutual connections from your Instagram data export
  • Community classifications — AI-generated category labels (e.g., “Design & Creative,” “Athletes & Sports”) assigned to each follower based on their public bio

2.3 Chrome Extension Data

The Kintsugi Data Sync Chrome extension collects the following data only when you explicitly initiate a data export:

  • Authentication tokens — Session cookies used to authenticate your Kintsugi account and maintain your login state between the extension and web app
  • Web history (limited) — The extension detects which social media site you are currently visiting (X, LinkedIn, or Instagram) to enable the correct export flow. We do not track or store your general browsing history
  • Page content — The extension reads follower lists, profile names, bios, and connection data from social media pages during an active export. This data is transmitted to the Kintsugi web app and stored in your account
  • User interactions (automated) — During an export, the extension uses the Chrome debugger API to simulate scrolling and clicking on social media pages to load and capture follower data. These automated actions only occur during an active export you initiate and are not monitored or recorded

The extension stores your authentication state and export progress locally using Chrome's storage API. This data remains on your device and is cleared when you sign out.

2.4 Waitlist & Usage Data

  • Your email address if you join our waitlist
  • Anonymous analytics about how you interact with our platform

3. How We Use Your Information

  • To map your social network into community clusters and generate your network visualization
  • To categorize your followers by industry using AI classification
  • To normalize and display follower locations on your dashboard
  • To display your public profile with community and location data
  • To generate AI-powered narrative reframes of your career gaps
  • To send you waitlist updates and product announcements
  • To improve and develop new features

4. AI Processing

Kintsugi uses AI (powered by Anthropic's Claude) to classify your followers into community categories based on their public bios and to reframe career narratives. Follower bios are sent to the AI in anonymized batches for classification. Text submitted for rewriting is processed in real-time and is not stored after the response is delivered. AI-generated content is provided as a suggestion — you should always review it before use.

5. Data Sharing & Limited Use

We do not sell or transfer your personal data to third parties. We share information only with:

  • Service providers — Infrastructure partners (Supabase for database hosting, Vercel for web hosting) that help us operate the platform under strict data processing agreements
  • AI providers — Anthropic, for processing follower classifications and narrative reframes. Only anonymized bio text is sent; no personally identifiable information is shared

We do not:

  • Sell or transfer user data to advertisers, data brokers, or information resellers
  • Use or transfer user data for personalized advertisements
  • Use or transfer user data to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes
  • Use data for purposes unrelated to the single purpose of network mapping and community visualization

The use of information received from Google APIs (including via the Chrome extension) adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

6. Public Profiles

Kintsugi allows you to create a public profile that displays your name, bio, profile photo, community breakdown, follower locations, interests, and network visualization. Public profiles are accessible to anyone with the link. You can control what appears on your public profile through your dashboard settings.

7. Data Security

We use industry-standard encryption and security practices to protect your data, including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS), secure database hosting with row-level security policies, and encrypted authentication tokens. Social media data is stored in access-controlled databases and can be deleted at any time by deleting your account.

8. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you via your dashboard
  • Request deletion of your account and all associated data (available in Settings)
  • Disconnect any social media account at any time
  • Uninstall the Chrome extension at any time, which immediately stops all data collection
  • Opt out of marketing communications

9. Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account (via Settings), we will remove all personal data within 30 days, including follower data, community maps, Instagram insights, and profile information, except where we are required by law to retain it. Chrome extension local storage is cleared when you sign out of the extension.

10. Chrome Extension Permissions

The Kintsugi Data Sync extension requests the following permissions, each used solely for the stated purpose:

  • tabs — Detects which social media site you are on to enable the correct export flow
  • sidePanel — Provides the extension's user interface for initiating and monitoring exports
  • activeTab — Reads follower data from the currently active social media tab when you start an export
  • debugger — Automates page scrolling and navigation on social media sites to load and capture complete follower lists during export
  • cookies — Authenticates your Kintsugi session between the extension and web app
  • storage — Stores authentication state and export progress locally on your device
  • downloads — Enables downloading your exported data as a local backup file
  • host_permissions (all URLs) — Required by the Chrome debugger API to attach to social media tabs across different domains and subdomains for data capture during export

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes via email or a notice on our website.
